Riesling's Renaissance

Get Out Of Your Wine Rut...

Every few years there is talk about a Riesling Renaissance. In the late 1980's M&R sent two of their managers over to Germany to study at the German wine academy- and German Riesling was featured in our stores.  In the early 1990's Riesling from Alsace was all the rage. M&R was there both in body and spirit as we send 2 groups of managers over to explore the region and taste the wines. In the 2000's Riesling from the US west coast took off in popularity. M&R was at the helm, visiting Chateau Ste Michelle's production facility and vineyards in Washington state. However, over the last decade, Riesling had fallen out of favor, as consumers reached for sweeter Moscato or easy drinking Pinot Grigio. But like any good trend, Riesling has returned. It is slowly becoming more fashionable to drink Riesling- production levels are up, and Germany now imports to the USA on a scale that surpasses all of Western Europe.

Riesling is to white wine as Cabernet is to red. It can be made into bone dry or intensely sweet wine. It can taste entirely different from region to region. I can be powerfully scented of minerals, flowers, lime and honey depending on provence, sweetness and age.

So put aside that Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, reach for a glass of sophistication and toast the Rielsing Renaissance.

Jacob Heims 2014
Steep Slope Riesling QBA

The Jacob Heims 2014 Steep Slope Riesling is a great cocktail wine from the Mosel region of Germany which is known for its steep slopes and slate filled terrior. We have carried this wine for a few years now and it never disappoints. The 2014 vintage is no exception. It is light and refreshing with aromas of peaches, tangerine and of course, some minerality. It has tasting notes of lime with a hint of apricot, and finishes with crisp green apple. This Riesling is off-dry but has enough honest sweetness to serve as casual sipper. It also pairs with garlic, chili and ginger spices that makes it ideal for Thai curry dishes.
